A lot of people think that they should just work harder and get good grades to make themselves feel better about their own lives. This kind of thinking is destructive, as it can lead to a number of pitfalls. The first and foremost is the notion that you somehow "deserve" something in life because you've worked hard enough. It can also keep you from taking time for yourself, unwind your motivation, or even enjoy a healthy lifestyle.
In this article, I'll explain where the destructive idea that you deserve things in life comes from, how it often leads to unhappiness, and what you can do to improve your own outlook on life.
"You Deserve It"
We live in a culture that encourages hard work and good behavior as the best way to achieve success in life. We learn this concept from an early age, and we see it reinforced with every compliment or reward we get for doing something we should be doing anyway (such as cleaning our room). As adults, many of us continue to believe that "hard work pays off" and can lead us to greater happiness if we just keep on trucking.
There are a couple of problems with the "hard work pays off" idea. First of all, it's not always true. There are many people out there that do lots of hard work and don't end up happy at all. Second, it's often not even your own hard work that gets you to where you need to be - it's someone else's, or even luck (there are lots of famous examples of overnight successes who have spent years trying to get popular). Even when you've worked hard for something, there is no guarantee that you'll succeed in your endeavors.
