Both Google and McCormick's Spice franchise have successful businesses that have changed the landscape of the digital marketplace. One difference between these two is that Google freely sends out their search terms to competitors while McCormick still has a near monopoly on their products. The two companies share traits in how they've been successful, which will be discussed in detail below. This blog post will also compare these two with other similar entities, such as Amazon and Wal-mart to what makes them unique.

The search engine market today is extremely competitive. We have at least seven competitors; Bing, Yahoo, Ask and AOL search,  DuckDuckGo, Yandex , Baidu and China Search.   Google owns about 60% of the business of all searches in the US. It holds about 86% of the desktop market share and 69% of the mobile market share.  
Google is truly king of the hill.
Similar to McCormick's Spice franchise, Google has a near monopoly on searches and has made search easier by making it accessible to everyone.   The company was formed in 1996 by Sergey Brin and Larry Page and the service started out as an early adwords website that translates into a directory of businesses.  They have since diversified into other markets like the Cloud, Android, YouTube, Search Engine Optimization and more recently smart speakers with their assistant AI Cortana.   Google is leading the way in artificial intelligence and robotics with their self-driving cars but they are also focusing on health care with their Cardiogram app which will help doctors gather information about heart disease.
Digital marketing is about information and how you can use that information to market to your potential customers.  One of Google's main ways of getting information is through search terms. Information from search terms, or keyword searches, allows Google to send out relevant ads and other marketing material directed at the user.   The main way that Google fetches these search terms is through "Google Autocomplete".   Autocomplete is an automated feature which Google uses in the search bar, where users are given time-saving suggestions of popular searches relating to their query as they type.   These suggestions are based on the real-time popularity of searched phrases. Google is giving the user information that they want to see.   One of their advantages is that users do not have to leave their current sites, as you can type a simple search and will be provided with information that is popular on the search engine.
The use of keywords and search terms allows Google to get more information about users' interests than any other competing platform could possibly think about.   Google's co-founder Sergey Brin has said: "If you have something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place." Google is not just the front page of the internet; they are also a leader in several other markets.   Some of these markets include: 
Google Cloud – Google has unrivaled cloud capabilities.   They offer their Cloud through a few different providers.  Amazon offers their own cloud solutions as well. However, many believe that the industry standard for cloud is Google's Cloud, which gives them a significant advantage over their competitors.
Google Android – This is another market where Google has proven to be the top dog with there being an operating system on 85% of smartphones in the world. Samsung recently announced that they would no longer use their own OS and will rely on Android exclusively going forward this past spring of 2017. This move was largely attributed to Google expanding its presence in Asia with its products and services.   This market is also highly competitive with Apple, Nokia and Microsoft being in the running as well.
Google Ads – Google is king of digital marketing.   They are the dominant player with nearly 90% of all digital ads worldwide, according to eMarketer.   The company has grown like crazy since 2005, when it had less than $100 million in revenue to them taking in $95 billion in 2016. That is quite a meteoric rise if you ask me!
I am sure that Google will continue to be the front page of the internet for years to come…and this is what makes their franchise so interesting and successful.  With each box that they can check off, it grows their business exponentially without fail.

I believe that both businesses have certain similarities, which we shall compare and contrast below.   Google has grown exponentially since their inception and they are still one of the top search engines today. First, Google was originally a directory, but it has since become more and more prevalent in the search business.   They have expanded into many other markets such as cloud and Android. Second, both Google's Cloud and McCormick's Spice are effective marketing tools that provide customers with what they want whenever they want it. As for Mccormick's Spice, it is not just a marketing tool; it is much more than that. It is truly a source of pleasure, as spice is an ingredient which enhances the taste of other dishes.
As for Google's Cloud, it is effective with their users because it saves people time by automating processes. It may not save us money in the longrun but that doesn't matter because its purpose is to accomplish its goal.   As for Google's Android, that has been one of the most successful mobile operating systems in history.   And just like Google's cloud, Android facilitates tasks to help them achieve their goals.

Conclusion
A monopoly of the search market provides Google with a pretty big advantage over other competitors.   If they want to monetize, they need to keep people searching on their site.   This is where keyword and autocomplete comes in handy as it allows people to find what they are looking for, quickly and efficiently.
With this being said, it is easy to see why Google has grown like crazy and dominated the industry so much.   With that being said, there are definitely other places to look for search results than just Google's search engine.
