A quick blog post I wrote today because I wanted to share a brief history of the word "Poquer".

Language has evolved throughout the years and many say that this is largely due to technological advances. For example, during the time when Spanish became a language spoken by nearly 1/4 of people in the World, there was a new way for written communication called "etiqueta de poquer." Etiqueta de poquer was with us for almost a century – well over 100 years - until the mid 1970s. In 1975 this language died out. Today, I would say that we are left with less than 30% of the population who can still speak etiqueta de poquer (or twopoquer as they put it).

This is what I wrote on my blog:

Turns out that I've been looking up this term since two weeks ago. "Etiqueta Poquer" is how Spanish settlers from the Canary Islands took to communicating their ideas and discoveries in Spain during the 1500's and 1600's. I've seen the word but until two weeks ago I had no idea what it was. Now, I'm learning that this was a way to make sense of the new world and would probably be very similar to pantomime if you think about it (think about how pantomime works for communication in this day and age). Anyway, I am a die-hard fan of investigating the etymology of modern words and phrases so this topic has been fascinating. I keep reading all these references though my Spanish is not very strong. The Spanish settlers were trying to figure out the New World so they wrote using pictures (or "etchings" as they put it) because they had no written vocabulary at the time. I got the impression that it was very similar to MSN-speak – in other words, whatever. They just wanted to communicate their thoughts as it were. They also got frustrated by this method of communication and therefore developed what we now know as Spanish from Italy.

Conclusion:

In this blog post, I highlighted a short history of the word "poquer" which is the term used to describe something "small and soft as a cat". This might be a difficult task for someone who doesn't speak Spanish. Let me clarify by stating that it's not hard at all to understand but it can be difficult to translate. Furthermore, it's not just one Spanish word but a compound noun made up of two words. The Latin root of this word is "pocer" which means "to penetrate" or "to get inside". So you can think of it as an old slang version of the word s*** because it's extremely similar (but different)..
